Embracing the Void: Why Less is More

A deep dive into why stripping away features can sometimes be the most powerful feature of all. Discussing the Android Zen philosophy.

When I first started designing this space, I wanted it to do everything. I wanted complex 3D WebGL backgrounds, interactive cursor trails, and a bespoke comment system built from scratch.

But as I iterated, I realized something fundamental: πŸ’’ every added feature was a distraction . It took away from the core purpose of a journal, which is reading.

The Android Zen Philosophy

β€œAndroid Zen” is a term I coined to describe this specific intersection of aesthetics:

  1. Scandinavian Minimalism: The structure and quietude. Deeply functional, nothing extraneous.
  2. Material Design 3: The warmth. The roundness. The heavily rounded corners (rounded-3xl everywhere) and soft surface tints that make the digital space feel approachable rather than sterile.

The Contrast

In light mode, the site feels like a crisp morning. Warm off-white, soft blue-tinted backgrounds. It’s airy. In dark mode, it switches entirely. It becomes technical, AOSP/Terminal-adjacent. The shadows disappear, replaced by crisp 1px outlines. It’s 🌸 focused and precise .

Ultimately, choosing to not add a feature is often πŸ’€ the hardest development decision you can make , but it’s usually the right one.
